UN Women Agency & PIA signs MoU to award PIA with ‘harassment-free’ airline

With an aim to promote drive of safe mobility for women and preventing harassment of women at the public places, UN Women Agency, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and the Federal Ombudsperson for Protection Against Harassment (FOSPAH) signed a landmark Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) in Islamabad.

“With nearly half of workforce of Pakistan comprising of women, that often feel bared to fully contribute in the society and economic prosperity, due to perceived and real hazards faced during transportation. It is every woman and girl’s right that they are provided with the same opportunity to travel freely and without fear of being harassed,” told our sources.

Recognising the importance of women’s and girls’ freedom of movement and right to harassment-free life, the country representative for UN Women, Sharmeela Rassool said:

“We need to create safe spaces and give women access to safe mobility. When both halves of the population live with their potential, the economies and societies grow. Women are key drivers of economic growth. PIA has just set a trend for the whole world to follow”.

Speaking on the occasion, PIA CEO Air Marshal Arshad Malik said: “We pledge as an organization to create a safer transport environment for women, whether it is in the offices or during transportation”.

خواتین کے لیے محفوظ نقل و حرکت کو فروغ دینے اور عوامی مقامات پر خواتین کو ہراساں کرنے کی روک تھام کے مقصد کے ساتھ ، اقوام متحدہ کی خواتین ایجنسی ، پاکستان انٹرنیشنل ایئرلائنز (پی آئی اے) اور وفاقی محتسب برائے تحفظ ہراساں کرنے کے خلاف (FOSPAH) نے ایک اہم ایم او یو پر دستخط کیے۔

"پاکستان کی تقریبا half آدھی افرادی قوت خواتین پر مشتمل ہے ، جو نقل و حمل کے دوران درپیش اور حقیقی خطرات کی وجہ سے اکثر معاشرے اور معاشی خوشحالی میں مکمل طور پر اپنا حصہ ڈالنے کے لیے تنگ محسوس کرتی ہے۔ یہ ہر عورت اور لڑکی کا حق ہے کہ انہیں آزادانہ طور پر اور ہراساں کیے جانے کے خوف کے بغیر سفر کرنے کا ایک ہی موقع فراہم کیا جاتا ہے۔

خواتین اور لڑکیوں کی نقل و حرکت کی آزادی اور ہراسانی سے پاک زندگی کے حق کی اہمیت کو تسلیم کرتے ہوئے ، اقوام متحدہ کی خواتین کے لیے ملکی نمائندہ شرمیلا رسول نے کہا:

"ہمیں محفوظ جگہیں بنانے اور خواتین کو محفوظ نقل و حرکت تک رسائی دینے کی ضرورت ہے۔ جب آبادی کے دونوں حصے اپنی صلاحیت کے ساتھ رہتے ہیں تو معیشتیں اور معاشرے ترقی کرتے ہیں۔ خواتین معاشی ترقی کی کلیدی محرک ہیں۔ پی آئی اے نے پوری دنیا کے لیے ایک ٹرینڈ قائم کیا ہے۔

اس موقع پر خطاب کرتے ہوئے پی آئی اے کے سی ای او ایئر مارشل ارشد ملک نے کہا: "ہم ایک تنظیم کے طور پر خواتین کے لیے محفوظ ٹرانسپورٹ ماحول بنانے کا عہد کرتے ہیں ، چاہے وہ دفاتر میں ہوں یا نقل و حمل کے دوران"۔
