The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has removed the new baggage rule from its website after facing intense criticism from people. While the draft notification has not been officially canceled, sources say it will likely be withdrawn soon.
The proposed rule would have meant that items worth over $1,200, including multiple mobile phones, could be seen as commercial goods rather than personal items. This would have forced travelers to pay customs duties or risk losing their belongings. The announcement quickly upset many people, especially overseas Pakistanis and international travelers.
Although FBR had asked for feedback on the rule, the public's pressure seems to have led them to remove it from their website. While they haven’t officially canceled it yet, sources suggest the rule won’t progress.
