Sindh High Court halts construction of high-rise next to Frere Hall

The construction of a high-rise building located next to Frere Hall in Pakistan has been temporarily halted by the Sindh High Court (SHC). The SHC ordered the stay on the construction after hearing a petition that argued the proposed building would violate heritage laws and damage the historic site's beauty and environment.

The petitioner also claimed that the construction of the high-rise building would cause traffic congestion and affect the surrounding infrastructure. The SHC has now directed the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to submit a detailed report on the environmental impact assessment of the proposed construction.

The decision has been welcomed by conservationists and activists who have been advocating for the protection of historic buildings and sites in Pakistan. They argue that many such sites are under threat due to the lack of implementation of heritage laws and regulations.

The Frere Hall, located in the heart of Karachi, is a popular tourist destination and a cultural landmark. It was built in the 19th century and is known for its beautiful architecture and lush green gardens. The building has been used for various purposes over the years, including a town hall, a library, and a museum.
