Pakistanis Build 5 Artificial Glaciers in Gilgit-Baltistan to Freeze and Store Water

Residents and scientists in Pakistan’s northern Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), which is famed for its scenic landscapes, glaciers, and some of the world’s tallest mountains, have recently found a unique way to a severe water deficit that has hampered crop growth in the region each year.

Experts from a local institute, Baltistan University, have teamed up with locals to construct artificial glaciers, or ice stupas, which resemble Buddhist temple towers and are used to collect and freeze abundant water in the winter months for use during the dry season, especially in the months of March and April when water is in high demand for wheat, maize, and potato cultivation. Sonam Wangchuk, an engineer from Ladakh, India, devised the technique in 2013.

While talking to the media he said that Gilgit-Baltistan was one of the world’s largest glaciated regions, the bodies of ice were rapidly melting, and water shortages would be a major challenge for the region in due course.

According to the news sources, two glaciers have been developed in Skardu while one has been made in Nagar, Hussainabad, and Khuwardu. Four of these glaciers stand above 4,000 meters while one is higher than 3,200 meters.

While talking to the media, a spokesperson for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Pakistan, Mehvish Bukari, said that UNDP will observe these glaciers on a weekly basis to ensure local residents receive uninterrupted water supply during summers in the coming years.

میڈیا سے گفتگو کرتے ہوئے انہوں نے کہا کہ گلگت بلتستان دنیا کے سب سے بڑے برفانی خطوں میں سے ایک ہے، برف کے ذخائر تیزی سے پگھل رہے ہیں، وقت آنے پر پانی کی قلت خطے کے لیے ایک بڑا چیلنج ہوگا۔
نیوز ذرائع کے مطابق اسکردو میں دو گلیشیئرز تیار کیے گئے ہیں جبکہ ایک نگر، حسین آباد اور خواردو میں بنایا گیا ہے۔ ان میں سے چار گلیشیئر 4,000 میٹر سے اوپر کھڑے ہیں جبکہ ایک 3,200 میٹر سے بلند ہے۔
میڈیا سے بات کرتے ہوئے اقوام متحدہ کے ترقیاتی پروگرام (یو این ڈی پی) پاکستان کی ترجمان مہوش بخاری نے کہا کہ یو این ڈی پی ان گلیشیئرز کا ہفتہ وار مشاہدہ کرے گا تاکہ مقامی باشندوں کو آنے والے برسوں میں گرمیوں کے دوران بلاتعطل پانی کی فراہمی کو یقینی بنایا جا سکے۔
