Pakistan to hold talks with IMF for sixth tranche to start by month-end

Pakistan will start staff-level discussions with the International Monetary Fund by end of the current month for the release of the sixth tranche under the $6 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF), our sources revealed.

The IMF board has a scheduled a meeting later this month to conduct its sixth review of the Pakistan program. “Our technical team will start virtual discussions with the IMF technical team on Sept 29,” Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin told our sources.

He went on to say that a list of issues to be discussed was received from the fund. “The final approval will be made in Washington by the middle of next month.” Mr. Tarin added.

 “The State Bank of Pakistan is watching the situation, and will intervene when required,” the minister said. However, he did not mention the level when it will make it compulsory for SBP to intervene.

On the issue of the current account, the minister said that he was constantly reviewing the imports trends. “We will review in case there are unnecessary imports,” the minister hinted at regulatory duties to slow down the imports of luxury items if required.

Besides, the spending on one-time import of vaccines the minister said that the import bill is also swelled by the import of automobile sector especially CBUs.

“We will also look into this issue”, the minister said, adding the automobile sector revives because of the slowdown last year mainly hit by the Covid-19.

ہمارے ذرائع نے انکشاف کیا ہے کہ پاکستان 6 بلین ڈالر کی توسیعی فنڈ سہولت (EFF) کے تحت چھٹی قسط جاری کرنے کے لیے رواں ماہ کے آخر تک بین الاقوامی مالیاتی فنڈ کے ساتھ عملے کی سطح پر بات چیت شروع کرے گا۔

آئی ایم ایف بورڈ نے پاکستان کے پروگرام کا چھٹا جائزہ لینے کے لیے اس ماہ کے آخر میں ایک میٹنگ شیڈول کی ہے۔ وزیر خزانہ شوکت ترین نے ہمارے ذرائع کو بتایا کہ ہماری ٹیکنیکل ٹیم آئی ایم ایف کی ٹیکنیکل ٹیم کے ساتھ ورچوئل بات چیت شروع کرے گی۔

انہوں نے مزید کہا کہ زیر بحث مسائل کی فہرست فنڈ سے موصول ہوئی ہے۔ "حتمی منظوری اگلے ماہ کے وسط تک واشنگٹن میں دی جائے گی۔" مسٹر ترین نے مزید کہا۔

وزیر نے کہا کہ اسٹیٹ بینک آف پاکستان صورتحال کو دیکھ رہا ہے اور ضرورت پڑنے پر مداخلت کرے گا۔ تاہم ، انہوں نے اس سطح کا ذکر نہیں کیا جب یہ اسٹیٹ بینک کو مداخلت کرنا لازمی قرار دے گا۔

کرنٹ اکاؤنٹ کے معاملے پر ، وزیر نے کہا کہ وہ درآمدات کے رجحانات کا مسلسل جائزہ لے رہے ہیں۔ غیر ضروری درآمدات کی صورت میں ہم جائزہ لیں گے۔

اس کے علاوہ ، ویکسین کی درآمد پر ایک وقت کے اخراجات نے کہا کہ درآمدی بل آٹوموبائل سیکٹر بالخصوص CBUs کی درآمد سے بھی بڑھتا ہے۔
