Pakistan elected head of G77 at UN

The development comes during the 45th ministerial meeting of Group of 77 and China, detained in a virtual format on Tuesday, the Foreign Office said in a statement.

According to the news sources, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi addressed the meeting and thanked the 134 members of G77 and China for resting their trust in Pakistan to lead the group in 2022.

The federal minister also highlighted that the world is challenged with a triple crisis: the Covid pandemic and its consequences; the challenge of realizing the United Nations Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development; and the existential threat of climate catastrophe – which has had an uneven impact on the developing countries.

Inclusive and impartial recovery from the current crisis would only be possible in the way if the developing countries are provided with adequate means, especially financial resources, to return to the path of sustained and sustainable economic growth, he added.

FM Qureshi also emphasized that the developing countries needed to promote a “Common Development Agenda” to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

He also highlights that, as the next chair of the Group of 77 and China, Pakistan would work with the members of the group to promote such a development agenda, including duty restructuring; redistribution of the $650 billion new SDRs to developing countries; larger concessional financing; mobilization of the $100 billion in annual climate finance by the developed countries; ending the billions in illicit financial flows from the developing countries and the return of their stolen assets; and the creation of an equitable and open trading system and a fair international tax regime.

The Group of 77, established in 1964, is the largest intergovernmental grouping of developing countries in the United Nations. It provides the means for the countries of the Global South to articulate and promote their collective economic interests within the UN system. According to the FO Pakistan is a founding member of the group and has had the distinct privilege to serve as its chair in New York on three occasions in the past.

نیوز ذرائع کے مطابق وزیر خارجہ شاہ محمود قریشی نے اجلاس سے خطاب کرتے ہوئے جی 77 کے 134 ارکان اور چین کا 2022 میں گروپ کی قیادت کے لیے پاکستان پر اعتماد کرنے پر شکریہ ادا کیا۔
وفاقی وزیر نے اس بات پر بھی روشنی ڈالی کہ دنیا کو تین گنا بحران کا سامنا ہے: کوویڈ وبائی بیماری اور اس کے نتائج؛ پائیدار ترقی کے لیے اقوام متحدہ کے ایجنڈے 2030 کو عملی جامہ پہنانے کا چیلنج؛ اور آب و ہوا کی تباہی کا وجودی خطرہ – جس کا ترقی پذیر ممالک پر غیر مساوی اثر پڑا ہے۔
انہوں نے مزید کہا کہ موجودہ بحران سے جامع اور غیرجانبدارانہ بحالی تبھی ممکن ہو گی جب ترقی پذیر ممالک کو پائیدار اور پائیدار اقتصادی ترقی کی راہ پر واپس آنے کے لیے مناسب ذرائع، خاص طور پر مالی وسائل فراہم کیے جائیں۔(ایف ایم) قریشی نے اس بات پر بھی زور دیا کہ ترقی پذیر ممالک کو 2030 تک اقوام متحدہ کے پائیدار ترقیاتی اہداف (ایس ڈی جی ایس) کے حصول کے لیے "مشترکہ ترقیاتی ایجنڈے" کو فروغ دینے کی ضرورت ہے۔
انہوں نے اس بات پر بھی روشنی ڈالی کہ 77 گروپ اور چین کے اگلے سربراہ کے طور پر، پاکستان گروپ کے ممبران کے ساتھ مل کر ایسے ترقیاتی ایجنڈے کو فروغ دینے کے لیے کام کرے گا، جس میں ڈیوٹی ری سٹرکچرنگ بھی شامل ہے۔ ترقی پذیر ممالک میں $650 بلین کے نئے (ایس ڈی آر ایس) کی دوبارہ تقسیم؛ بڑی رعایتی فنانسنگ؛ ترقی یافتہ ممالک کی طرف سے سالانہ موسمیاتی فنانس میں 100 بلین ڈالر کا متحرک ہونا؛ ترقی پذیر ممالک سے اربوں کے غیر قانونی مالیاتی بہاؤ کو ختم کرنا اور ان کے چوری شدہ اثاثوں کی واپسی؛ اور ایک منصفانہ اور کھلے تجارتی نظام اور ایک منصفانہ بین الاقوامی ٹیکس نظام کی تشکیل۔
77 اقوام متحدہ میں ترقی پذیر ممالک کا سب سے بڑا بین الحکومتی گروپ ہے۔ یہ گلوبل ساؤتھ کے ممالک کو اقوام متحدہ کے نظام کے اندر اپنے اجتماعی اقتصادی مفادات کو بیان کرنے اور فروغ دینے کے ذرائع فراہم کرتا ہے۔ ایف او کے مطابق پاکستان اس گروپ کا بانی رکن ہے اور اسے ماضی میں تین مواقع پر نیویارک میں اس کی چیئر کے طور پر خدمات انجام دینے کا خصوصی اعزاز حاصل ہوا ہے۔
