MSF establishes satellite clinic to expand medical care in Peshawar

The Médecins Sans Frontiers (MSF) has established a satellite clinic at Rural Health Centre (RHC) Badaber to expand medical care of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in the Peshawar district.

A press release said that the satellite clinic was set up in collaboration with the health department, the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, to reach out to the infected and vulnerable people and increase diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is caused by a parasite transmitted by the bite of an infected female phlebotomine sandfly.

The disease appears in the form of a small lesion and, if not treated, can cause severe physical disfigurement. It is not life-threatening but may expose patients to stigma and discrimination in their community. Cutaneous leishmaniasis is one of the main tropical diseases in Pakistan.

The new satellite clinic is designed to provide treatment to infected people in the outskirts of Peshawar. The clinic at RHC Badaber will receive patients who are diagnosed at MSF’s cutaneous leishmaniasis clinic in the Government Naseerullah Khan Babar Memorial Hospital (GNKBMH).

The treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis requires a daily or biweekly injection during three to eight weeks, depending on the severity. In the past, MSF has seen patients not completing their treatment as traveling long hours every day is difficult and expensive for them.

The satellite clinic at RHC Badaber allows patients to continue treatment close to their communities.

ایک پریس ریلیز میں کہا گیا ہے کہ سیٹلائٹ کلینک محکمہ صحت ، خیبر پخت��نخوا کے تعاون سے متاثرہ اور کمزور لوگوں تک پہنچنے اور بیماری کی تشخیص اور علاج کو بڑھانے کے لیے قائم کیا گیا تھا۔

کٹنیئس لشمانیاس ایک پرجیوی کی وجہ سے ہوتا ہے جو متاثرہ خاتون فلیبوٹومائن سینڈ فلائی کے کاٹنے سے منتقل ہوتا ہے۔

یہ بیماری ایک چھوٹے زخم کی صورت میں ظاہر ہوتی ہے اور اگر اس کا علاج نہ کیا جائے تو یہ شدید جسمانی خرابی کا سبب بن سکتا ہے۔ یہ جان لیوا نہیں ہے لیکن مریضوں کو ان کی کمیونٹی میں بدنامی اور امتیازی سلوک کا سامنا کر سکتا ہے۔ کٹنیئس لشمانیاس پاکستان میں ایک اہم اشنکٹبندیی بیماری ہے۔

نیا سیٹلائٹ کلینک پشاور کے مضافات میں متاثرہ افراد کو علاج فراہم کرنے کے لیے بنایا گیا ہے۔ آر ایچ سی بڈابیر میں کلینک وہ مریض وصول کرے گا جن کی تشخیص گورنمنٹ نصیر اللہ خان بابر میموریل ہسپتال (جی این کے بی ایم ایچ) میں ایم ایس ایف کے کٹنیئس لشمانیاسس کلینک میں ہوتی ہے۔

کٹنیئس لشمانیاسس کے علاج میں شدت کے لحاظ سے تین سے آٹھ ہفتوں کے دوران روزانہ یا دو ہفتہ وار انجیکشن کی ضرورت ہوتی ہے۔ ماضی میں ، ایم ایس ایف نے دیکھا ہے کہ مریض اپنا علاج مکمل نہیں کر رہے ہیں کیونکہ ہر دن طویل سفر کرنا ان کے لیے مشکل اور مہنگا ہوتا ہے۔

آر ایچ سی بڈابیر میں سیٹلائٹ کلینک مریضوں کو اپنی کمیونٹیز کے قریب علاج جاری رکھنے کی اجازت دیتا ہے۔
