Malir Expressway’s Approval Strongly Opposed By Residents Of Karachi

The Malir Expressway was deemed an ill-advised developmental project by the citizens when it was granted approval. The approval is granted to complete the 15km long portion up to the city’s Quaidabad area by the end of this year.

The estimated cost for this project is around Rs.27.5bn, while it will link the posh residential areas on the outskirts of the city with the Karachi-Hyderabad motorway and the main city.

The project was launched without the input of local stakeholders, however, which raised questions regarding the fallout of the controversial project. The Sindh government plans on acquiring more land for the project which can result in a negative impact on the surrounding since one of the last few surviving green belts can be destroyed. Environmental activists have also expressed their concerns since around 1,900 species of trees, 176 species of birds, and 73 species of butterflies among other wildlife will severely be affected by the building of the expressway.

ملیر ایکسپریس وے کی منظوری کے وقت شہریوں نے اسے ایک ناجائز ترقیاتی منصوبہ سمجھا۔ شہر قائد آباد تک 15 کلومیٹر طویل حصے کو اس سال کے آخر تک مکمل کرنے کی منظوری دی گئی ہے۔
اس منصوبے کی تخمینہ لاگت تقریباً 27.5 بلین روپے ہے، جبکہ یہ شہر کے مضافات میں واقع پوش رہائشی علاقوں کو کراچی-حیدرآباد موٹروے اور مرکزی شہر سے جوڑ دے گا۔
یہ منصوبہ مقامی اسٹیک ہولڈرز کے ان پٹ کے بغیر شروع کیا گیا تھا، تاہم، جس نے متنازعہ منصوبے کے خاتمے کے حوالے سے سوالات اٹھائے تھے۔ سندھ حکومت اس منصوبے کے لیے مزید زمین حاصل کرنے کا ارادہ رکھتی ہے جس کے نتیجے میں گردونواح پر منفی اثرات مرتب ہو سکتے ہیں کیونکہ آخری چند گرین بیلٹس میں سے ایک کو تباہ کیا جا سکتا ہے۔ ماحولیاتی کارکنوں نے بھی اپنے خدشات کا اظہار کیا ہے کیونکہ ایکسپریس وے کی تعمیر سے درختوں کی 1900 اقسام، پرندوں کی 176 اقسام اور تتلیوں کی 73 اقسام دیگر جنگلی حیات شدید متاثر ہوں گی۔
