KMC & UNDP ink MoU to upgrade Karachi's infrastructure

According to the MoU, the UNDP will support the KMC and its associated departments, including the Parks and Horticulture Department, for promoting sustainable development with a particular focus on the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 8, Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 11, Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 15, Life on Land.

Karachi Administrator Laeeq Ahmed said the signing of the MoU with the UNDP would help uplift parks, infrastructure, and the environment of the city. “The participation of international development agencies and civil society in the process of development and prosperity of Karachi is welcoming,” he said while speaking at the MoU-signing ceremony.

As per the MoU, the UNDP will support the KMC’s Parks and Horticulture Department in its Sustainable Development Programme, especially in the areas of economic growth, urban development, environmental improvement, infrastructure development, solid waste management, health, and education.

The MoU was signed by the Karachi administrator and UNDP Pakistan Resident Representative Knut Ostby.

Mutual cooperation will be promoted in various fields for skills development, increasing employment opportunities, and resolving issues of migration to urban areas in line with the various UNDP models of SDGs.

Environmental pollution is being given importance at the international level and steps are taken to combat it. Especially in industrial areas, and various measures are being taken to address them, including tree plantation, said the statement.

Knut Ostby, UNDP resident representative, said: “UNDP and Karachi Metropolitan Corporation have signed an MOU to promote sustainable development, with a keen focus on decent work and economic growth, sustainable cities and communities, and climate action. We will be working together to engage private sector participation for sustainable development.”

کراچی کے ایڈمنسٹریٹر لئیق احمد نے کہا کہ یو این ڈی پی کے ساتھ ایم او یو پر دستخط کرنے سے شہر کے پارکوں ، بنیادی ڈھانچے اور ماحول کو ترقی میں مدد ملے گی۔ ایم او یو پر دستخط کرنے کی تقریب سے خطاب کرتے ہوئے انہوں نے کہا ، "کراچی کی ترقی اور خوشحالی کے عمل میں بین الاقوامی ترقیاتی اداروں اور سول سوسائٹی کی شرکت کا خیرمقدم ہے۔"

ایم او یو کے مطابق ، یو این ڈی پی اپنے پائیدار ترقیاتی پروگرام ، خاص طور پر معاشی ، شہری ترقی ، ماحولیاتی بہتری ، بنیادی ڈھانچے کی ترقی، کچرے کے انتظام ، صحت اور تعلیم کے شعبوں میں کے ایم سی کے پارکس اور ہیلتھ اینڈ ایجوکیشن ڈپارٹمنٹ کی مدد کرے گی۔

مہارتوں کی نشوونما ، روزگار کے مواقع میں اضافہ ، اور ایس ڈی جی کے مختلف یو این ڈی پی ماڈلز کے مطابق شہری علاقوں میں نقل مکانی کے معاملات حل کرنے کے لئے باہمی تعاون کو مختلف شعبوں میں فروغ دیا جائے گا۔

ماحولیاتی آلودگی کو بین الاقوامی سطح پر اہمیت دی جارہی ہے اور اس سے نمٹنے کے لئے اقدامات کیے جارہے ہیں۔ بیان میں کہا گیا ہے کہ خاص طور پر صنعتی علاقوں میں اور درخت لگانے سمیت مختلف اقدامات کیے جارہے ہیں۔

یو این ڈی پی کے رہائشی نمائندے نٹ آسٹبی نے کہا: "یو این ڈی پی اور کراچی میٹرو پولیٹن کارپوریشن نے اچھے کام اور معاشی ، شہروں اور برادریوں ، اور آب و ہوا پر گہری توجہ کے ساتھ یقینی ترقی کو فروغ دینے کے لئے ایک مفاہمت نامے پر دستخط کیے ہیں۔ ہم یقینی ترقی کے لئے نجی شعبے میں شمولیت کے لئے مل کر کام کریں گے۔
