Karachi coastal project under CPEC to boost economy

The recent inclusion of the Karachi Coastal Comprehensive Development Zone (KCCDZ) project in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) will boost Pakistan's economy and enhance industrial and development cooperation between Pakistan and China, said Pakistani experts and officials.

The decision to include the project in Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi into the CPEC was made at the CPEC's recent 10th Joint Cooperation Committee Meeting.

Covering a total area of about 930 hectares, of which 640 hectares are reclaimed, the environment-friendly KCCDZ envisages four new berths for the Karachi Port Trust, according to a statement from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs of Pakistan.

The mega project, being built with an expected investment of $3.5 billion, will also house a state-of-the-art fishing port, with a world-class fisheries export processing zone to boost the country's trade potential, said the ministry.

It will also drastically improve the marine ecosystem and reduce pollution with the establishment of a water treatment plant, the ministry said.

Terming the project, a game-changer for Pakistan, Prime Minister Imran Khan said recently that the coastal development project will bring Karachi on a par with developed port cities of the world.

The project will present opportunities for investors, Khan said on Twitter, adding that it will also help clean up marine habitats for fishermen and develop 20,000 low-income housing units.

The KCCDZ is the first of its kind under the CPEC, which reflects the commitment of Pakistan and China to forge high-quality cooperation to improve people's livelihoods, Pakistani Minister for Maritime Affairs Ali Haider Zaidi told Xinhua.

 "As all-weather strategic cooperative partners, China and Pakistan are stepping up cooperation in various sectors, giving impetus to the growth of bilateral relations, economic and social development of the two countries," the minister said.

پاکستان کے جنوبی بندرگاہی شہر کراچی میں اس منصوبے کو CPEC میں شامل کرنے کا فیصلہ CPEC کی حالیہ 10ویں مشترکہ تعاون کمیٹی کے اجلاس میں کیا گیا۔

پاکستان کی میری ٹائم افیئرز کی وزارت کے ایک بیان کے مطابق، تقریباً 930 ہیکٹر کے کل رقبے پر محیط ہے، جس میں سے 640 ہیکٹر دوبارہ حاصل کیے گئے ہیں، ماحول دوست (کے سی سی ڈی زیڈ) کراچی پورٹ ٹرسٹ کے لیے چار نئی برتھوں کا تصور کرتا ہے۔

وزارت نے کہا کہ 3.5 بلین ڈالر کی متوقع سرمایہ کاری سے تعمیر کیے جانے والے اس میگا پروجیکٹ میں ایک جدید ترین ماہی گیری کی بندرگاہ بھی ہوگی، جس میں عالمی معیار کا ماہی گیری برآمدی پروسیسنگ زون ہوگا تاکہ ملک کی تجارتی صلاحیت کو بڑھایا جاسکے۔

وزارت نے کہا کہ اس سے سمندری ماحولیاتی نظام میں زبردست بہتری آئے گی اور واٹر ٹریٹمنٹ پلانٹ کے قیام سے آلودگی میں کمی آئے گی۔

اس منصوبے کو پاکستان کے لیے گیم چینجر قرار دیتے ہوئے، وزیراعظم عمران خان نے حال ہی میں کہا تھا کہ ساحلی ترقی کا منصوبہ کراچی کو دنیا کے ترقی یافتہ بندرگاہی شہروں کے برابر کر دے گا۔

خان نے ٹویٹر پر کہا کہ یہ منصوبہ سرمایہ کاروں کے لیے مواقع فراہم کرے گا، انہوں نے مزید کہا کہ اس سے ماہی گیروں کے لیے سمندری رہائش گاہوں کو صاف کرنے اور 20,000 کم آمدنی والے ہاؤسنگ یونٹس تیار کرنے میں بھی مدد ملے گی۔
پاکستانی وزیر برائے سمندری امور علی حیدر زیدی نے شنہوا کو بتایا کہ KCCDZ CPEC کے تحت اپنی نوعیت کا پہلا منصوبہ ہے، جو پاکستان اور چین کے لوگوں کی زندگی کو بہتر بنانے کے لیے اعلیٰ معیار کے تعاون کے عزم کی عکاسی کرتا ہے۔

وزیر نے کہا کہ "ہر موسم کے تزویراتی تعاون پر مبنی شراکت داروں کے طور پر، چین اور پاکستان مختلف شعبوں میں تعاون کو بڑھا رہے ہیں، جو دونوں ممالک کے باہمی تعلقات، اقتصادی اور سماجی ترقی کو فروغ دے رہے ہیں۔"
