The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) government has approved PKR 9.5 billion for reconstruction and expansion of the 42-kilometer ‘Swabi-Mardan Road’. It was done so to overcome traffic congestion difficulties in both Swabi and Mardan. The project seeks to expand the single lane road into a double lane to ensure smooth flow of traffic and a reduction in the prevalent chances of any catastrophic collision.
Shahram Khan Tarakai, the provincial minister for the local government did a commendable job in this context. Reconstruction of the road had been a longstanding demand of the people of Swabi and Mardan according to our sources and finally, the reconstruction work of the project is expected to begin soon.
History of the road shows a grim picture as not one of any previous provincial governments had taken on the challenge of reconstruction and expansion of this road. Built about three decades back, Frontier Highway Authority had repaired it a several times but because of excessive pressure of the traffic, it never had any time been in a good state. This time around, working on the promise made in the election campaigns of 2018, the current provincial government is about to work on it.
Once completed, this development project is expected to boost trade activities in Mardan, Swabi and Buner districts. It will also provide better access to Peshawar and other big cities.
