Dollar scales new height by hitting Rs 170

Amid strong demand for dollars from panicky importers, the local currency could not put up any resistance and plunged to an all-time low at Rs170 against the greenback in the interbank market.

Currency dealers said the interbank market was full of speculative reports and observations which hit the exchange rate negatively bringing the rupee under massive pressure. Meanwhile, in the open market, the dollar was selling at Rs172.60.

“The currency market is now working as a stock market: highly speculative, news-based and [vulnerable to] rumors about the country’s economic health particularly external account,” said Atif Ahmed, a currency dealer in the interbank market.

Along with speculation, the demand was still high which is why the dollar appreciating on a day-to-day basis. “Highly speculative market creating a panic-like situation and importers are booking dollars at whatever rates are available,” added Mr. Atif.

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) last week amended the prudential regulations to slow down speedy growth in imports which swelled to over $6 billion in August alone.

The SBP said the targeted step would help to moderate demand growth in the economy, leading to slower import growth and thus supporting the balance of payments.

Currency dealers fear that the balance of payments could see a reverse trend as in the first two months (July-August) of FY22 the country recorded a current account deficit (CAD) of $2.29bn against $1.8bn in the entire FY21 dipping from an all-time high of $20bn in FY18.

انٹربینک مارکیٹ میں کرنسی ڈیلر عاطف احمد نے کہا ، "کرنسی مارکیٹ اب اسٹاک مارکیٹ کی طرح کام کر رہی ہے: انتہائی قیاس آرائی ، خبروں پر مبنی اور ملک کی معاشی صحت خاص طور پر بیرونی اکاؤنٹ کے بارے میں افواہوں کی وجہ سے۔"

قیاس آرائیوں کے ساتھ ساتھ ، مانگ اب بھی زیادہ تھی جس کی وجہ سے ڈالر روزانہ کی بنیاد پر بڑھ رہا ہے۔ مسٹر عاطف نے مزید کہا ، "انتہائی قیاس آرائی والی مارکیٹ ایک گھبراہٹ جیسی صورتحال پیدا کر رہی ہے اور درآمد کنندگان جو بھی ریٹ دستیاب ہیں اس پر ڈالر بک کر رہے ہیں۔"
اسٹیٹ بینک آف پاکستان (ایس بی پی) نے گذشتہ ہفتے درآمدات میں تیزی سے نمو کو سست کرنے کے لیے احتیاطی ضوابط میں ترمیم کی جو صرف اگست میں بڑھ کر 6 ارب ڈالر تک پہنچ گئی۔

اسٹیٹ بینک نے کہا کہ ٹارگٹڈ قدم معیشت میں مانگ کی شرح کو اعتدال میں لانے میں مدد دے گا ، جس کی وجہ سے درآمد کی رفتار سست ہو گی اور اس طرح ادائیگیوں کے توازن میں مدد ملے گی۔

کرنسی ڈیلرز کو خدشہ ہے کہ ادائیگیوں کے توازن میں الٹا رجحان نظر آسکتا ہے کیونکہ مالی سال 22 کے پہلے دو ماہ (جولائی تا اگست) میں ملک نے کرنٹ اکاؤنٹ خسارہ (سی اے ڈی) 2.29 بلین ڈالر ریکارڈ کیا جو پورے مالی سال 21 میں 1.8 بلین ڈالر تھا۔ مالی سال 18 میں وقت 20 بلین ڈالر زیادہ ہے۔
