Civil society’s role in afforestation underscored

Special Assistant to PM on Climate Change Malik Amin Aslam on Sunday highlighted the role of the civil society organizations in boosting the country’s forest cover and climate resilience through enhanced contribution towards the government’s pursuit of sustainable management of forests on national and sub-national levels.

“When forests are managed sustainably, they can grow healthy, productive can be resilient and renewable ecosystems, which can thrive while at the same time providing essential goods and services to people worldwide,” he told a tree plantation event organized here in an upscale locality in collaboration with a civil society organization.

PM’s aide Malik Amin said the significance of forests could not be underestimated or exaggerated.

“We rely on forests for our survival right from the air we breathe to the wood we use. Besides being the backbone of natural ecosystems and habitats for animals and a source of livelihood for humans, forests also offer watershed protection, prevent soil erosion, fight environmental degradation, air pollution, improve human health and address devastating fallouts of the global climate crisis,” he said.

Malik Amin said it was imperative that all forces and segments of the civil society play their part in increasing the country’s forest cover to make Pakistan clean, green, and climate-resilient.

He also urged the civil society organizations, particularly educational institutions, to join the incumbent government`s largest-ever afforestation initiative Ten Billion Tree Tsunami Programme (TBTTP) launched under Prime Minister Imran Khan’s vision for clean and green Pakistan.

وزیر اعظم کے معاون خصوصی برائے موسمیاتی تبدیلی ملک امین اسلم نے اتوار کے روز قومی اور ذیلی قومی سطح پر جنگلات کے پائیدار انتظام کے حصول کے لیے حکومت کی جانب سے بڑھتی ہوئی شراکت کے ذریعے ملک کے جنگلات کا احاطہ اور آب و ہوا میں لچک بڑھانے میں سول سوسائٹی تنظیموں کے کردار پر روشنی ڈالی۔

"جب جنگلات کا پائیدار انتظام کیا جاتا ہے تو ، وہ صحت مند بڑھ سکتے ہیں ، پیداواری لچکدار اور قابل تجدید ماحولیاتی نظام ہوسکتے ہیں ، جو ترقی کر سکتے ہیں جبکہ ایک ہی وقت میں دنیا بھر کے لوگوں کو ضروری سامان اور خدمات فراہم کر سکتے ہیں-وزیر اعظم کے معاون ملک امین نے کہا کہ جنگلات کی اہمیت کو کم یا کم نہیں کیا جا سکتا۔

"ہم اپنی بقا کے لیے جنگلات پر انحصار کرتے ہیں جس ہوا میں ہم سانس لیتے ہیں اس سے لکڑی تک جو ہم استعمال کرتے ہیں۔ قدرتی ماحولیاتی نظام اور جانوروں کے لیے رہائش گاہوں اور انسانوں کے ذریعہ معاش کے لیے ریڑھ کی ہڈی ہونے کے علاوہ ، جنگلات واٹرشیڈ تحفظ ، مٹی کے کٹاؤ کو روکنے ، ماحولیاتی انحطاط سے بچنے ، فضائی آلودگی ، انسانی صحت کو بہتر بنانے اور عالمی موسمیاتی بحران کے تباہ کن نتائج سے نمٹنے کے لیے پیش کرتے ہیں۔

ملک امین نے کہا کہ یہ ضروری ہے کہ سول سوسائٹی کی تمام قوتیں اور طبقات پاکستان کو صاف ستھرا ، سبز اور آب و ہوا سے محفوظ بنانے کے لیے ملک کے جنگلات کو بڑھانے میں اپنا کردار ادا کریں۔

انہوں نے سول سوسائٹی کی تنظیموں بالخصوص تعلیمی اداروں پر بھی زور دیا کہ وہ موجودہ حکومت کے سب سے بڑے جنگلاتی اقدام دس بلین ٹری سونامی پروگرام (ٹی بی ٹی ٹی پی) میں شامل ہوں جو کہ صاف ستھرا اور سرسبز پاکستان کے لیے وزیراعظم عمران خان کے وژن کے تحت شروع کیا گیا ہے۔
