Types of Passports in Pakistan & Their Delivery Times

When you want a passport in Pakistan, there are rules in the Passport Act of 1974 and the Passport Rules of 2021. These rules carefully explain how to get different types of passports. Knowing about each type and how long it takes to get one is essential, especially if you plan to travel abroad. In this blog, we'll talk about the four main types of passports in Pakistan, walk you through how to apply for them, and let you know how long it usually takes to get them.

In Pakistan, four main types of passports are issued based on the purpose of travel and the individual's status. These types are:

Ordinary Passport

  • Issued to all citizens of Pakistan for general international travel.
  • Subject to completion of all required formalities.

Official Passport

  • Issued by Schedule-III of Passport Rules 2021.
  • Generally provided to government officials and individuals representing Pakistan on official business.

Diplomatic Passport

  • Issued to dignitaries of the State and diplomats.
  • Regulated by Schedule-IV of Passport Rules 2021.
  • The approval for Diplomatic Passports is the responsibility of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Emergency Travel Document (ETD)

  • Issued for emergencies to Pakistanis residing abroad.
  • Allowing for a one-time journey back to Pakistan.

Passport Delivery Time

In a recent change, the delivery time for regular passport applications has been extended to a maximum of 21 working days, a notable shift from the previous 10-day timeframe.

For urgent passport applications, the new delivery time is now 5 days, a slight adjustment from the earlier 4 days.

Prerequisite Documents for Obtaining Urgent/Normal Passport

For Individuals Ages 18 and Above:

  • To apply for a passport, you'll need to provide evidence of payment for the passport fee through the original bank receipt or an e-payment confirmation received via SMS or email, including the PSID number. Make sure to bring your valid CNIC/NICOP along with a photocopy.
  • Bring the original and a photocopy if you've had a passport before. Government, semi-government, or autonomous body employees should also include a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the relevant department.
  • For dual nationals, submit your foreign passport along with a photocopy. In the case of a lost passport, provide a police report detailing the previous passport number.

For Individuals Ages Under 18/Minors:

  • To get a passport for a minor, you need to show proof of paying the required fee, either through the original bank receipt or an e-payment confirmation that includes the PSID number.
  • You should also provide the original Child Registration Certificate (CRC/Form "B"), Family Registration Certificate (FRC), or Smart Card, along with a photocopy.
  • Bring both parents' original valid CNICs or Passports, along with photocopies, as per the Passport Rules of 2021. If the minor is applying, one of their parents or a legal guardian appointed by the court of law should accompany them, along with the original valid CNIC/NICOP of the parent or guardian.
  • In parental separation or divorce cases, present the custody papers granted by the Court of Law. If only one parent applies due to divorce or separation, explicit permission is needed for passport issuance. This can be in the form of the other parent's physical presence or consent on a duly attested non-judicial stamp paper, per the Passport Rules of 2021.
  • If a guardian is applying, they need a guardianship certificate issued by the court of law. The appointed guardian must visit the Passport Office with the minor, along with their original CNIC and photocopy.
