Project Launched To Set Up Urban Town Centres in Merged Districts of Peshawar

A spokesperson for the Merged Areas Governance Project (MAGP) said that the scheme with an estimated cost of Rs7827.53 million is part of the Annual Development Programme (ADP) for 2021-22.

He added that in June 2021, the KP government authorities had conducted a survey with the technical assistance of the Merged Areas Governance Project (MAGP) of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which surveyed more than 80 urban town centres in the merged areas.

Discussing the concept behind the project, Muhammad Babar Jan from the MAGP, said that a town centre or bazaar is the backbone of a city’s economy. “It is a place where significant commerce, culture, and power is concentrated.

People from different backgrounds meet to trade goods and services, access community services and facilities, and enjoy entertainment activities in a hygienic, clean and green atmosphere.”

According to the spokesperson, several traders in the merged districts were interviewed during a survey for the project and all of them responded that they could do better if the markets in their areas were provided with better facilities including power supply and streetlights, drinking water plants, public toilets and drainage system.

The traders also sought that the link roads connecting the surrounding communities to the bazaar also needed to be rehabilitated to make the market more accessible while bus and taxicab stand also need to be built to facilitate commuters as it would enable more people to come to the bazaar and thus boost their business.

انہوں نے مزید کہا کہ جون 2021 میں، کے پی کے حکومتی حکام نے اقوام متحدہ کے ترقیاتی پروگرام (یو این ڈی پی) کے ضم شدہ علاقوں کی حکومتی منصوبے (ایم اے جی پی) کی تکنیکی مدد سے ایک سروے کیا تھا، جس میں ضم شدہ علاقوں میں 80 سے زائد شہری ٹاؤن سینٹرز کا سروے کیا گیا تھا۔

ایم اے جی پی سے تعلق رکھنے والے محمد بابر جان نے پروجیکٹ کے پس پردہ تصور پر گفتگو کرتے ہوئے کہا کہ ٹاؤن سینٹر یا بازار شہر کی معیشت میں ریڑھ کی ہڈی کی حیثیت رکھتے ہیں۔ "یہ ایک ایسی جگہ ہے جہاں اہم تجارت، ثقافت اور طاقت مرتکز ہے۔

مختلف پس منظر سے تعلق رکھنے والے لوگ اشیاء اور خدمات کی تجارت کرنے، کمیونٹی سروسز اور سہولیات تک رسائی حاصل کرنے اور حفظان صحت، صاف اور سرسبز ماحول میں تفریحی سرگرمیوں سے لطف اندوز ہونے کے لیے ملتے ہیں۔

ترجمان کے مطابق منصوبے کے سروے کے دوران ضم شدہ اضلاع کے متعدد تاجروں سے انٹرویوز کیے گئے اور ان سب نے جواب دیا کہ اگر ان کے علاقوں کی مارکیٹوں کو بجلی کی فراہمی اور اسٹریٹ لائٹس، پینے کے پانی کے پلانٹس سمیت بہتر سہولیات فراہم کی جائیں تو وہ بہتر کام کر سکتے ہیں۔ عوامی بیت الخلاء اور نکاسی آب کا نظام۔

تاجروں نے یہ بھی مطالبہ کیا کہ بازار سے ارد گرد کی آبادیوں کو ملانے والی لنک روڈز کو بھی بحال کرنے کی ضرورت ہے تاکہ بازار کو مزید قابل رسائی بنایا جا سکے جبکہ مسافروں کی سہولت کے لیے بس اور ٹیکسی اسٹینڈز بھی بنائے جائیں کیونکہ اس سے زیادہ سے زیادہ لوگ بازار میں آ سکیں گے۔ اور اس طرح ان کے کاروبار کو فروغ دیتے ہیں.
