ADB Plans To Provide $10 billion To Pakistan in Fresh Assistance

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has plans to provide Pakistan with about $10 billion in fresh assistance for various development projects in addition to $700 million financings currently available to procure Covid-19 vaccines under the bank’s APVAX facility.

The disclosure was made by Eugenue Zukhov, Director General, Central and West Asia Department of ADB during a call he made on Omar Ayub Khan, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs in Islamabad.

Appreciating the ADB for continued technical and financial support to the government of Pakistan, the minister also acknowledged the provision of $500 million for procurement of Covid vaccine and assured of the government’s commitment to maximum vaccination for the eligible population.

ADB Country Director Yong Ye, Principal Energy Specialist Asad Aleem, Senior Project Officer Nasruminallah Mian also joined the meeting.

Zukhov reiterated ADB’s commitment to support the government’s reform agenda and to speed up the economic recovery process amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

He informed that ADB planned to provide Pakistan about $10 billion in fresh assistance for various development projects, particularly in the sectors of urban services, disaster risk reduction, and policy-based programs in the next five years.

He also informed that additional financing of $700 million was currently available for Pakistan to procure Covid-19 vaccines under APVAX.

The minister highlighted that given rapid urbanization and population growth, the urban services sector was a high priority of the present government.

“The government is committed to improving urban infrastructure and services including water and sanitation services, public transport, urban flooding and disaster management, and health facilities,” he added.

At present, ADB was financing 32 development projects amounting to $6.4 billion in energy, road and transport, agriculture and irrigation, urban services, education, health, and social protection sectors.

ایشیائی ترقیاتی بینک (ADB) نے پاکستان کو مختلف ترقیاتی منصوبوں کے لیے تقریباً 10 بلین ڈالر کی تازہ امداد فراہم کرنے کا منصوبہ بنایا ہے، اس کے علاوہ اس وقت بینک کی (اے پی وی اے ایکس) سہولت کے تحت کورونا وائرس ویکسینز کی خریداری کے لیے 700 ملین ڈالر کی فنانسنگ دستیاب ہے۔

یہ انکشاف اے ڈی بی کے سینٹرل اینڈ ویسٹ ایشیا ڈپارٹمنٹ کے ڈائریکٹر جنرل یوجینیو زوخوف نے اسلام آباد میں وفاقی وزیر برائے اقتصادی امور عمر ایوب خان سے ملاقات کے دوران کیا۔

حکومت پاکستان کے لیے مسلسل تکنیکی اور مالی معاونت کے لیے (اے ڈی بی) کی تعریف کرتے ہوئے، وزیر نے کووِڈ ویکسین کی خریداری کے لیے 500 ملین ڈالر کی فراہمی کو بھی تسلیم کیا، اور اہل آبادی کے لیے زیادہ سے زیادہ ویکسینیشن کے لیے حکومت کے عزم کا یقین دلایا۔

زخوف نے ADB کے حکومت کے اصلاحاتی ایجنڈے کی حمایت کرنے اور Covid-19 وبائی امراض کے درمیان معاشی بحالی کے عمل کو تیز کرنے کے عزم کا اعادہ کیا۔

انہوں نے بتایا کہ ADB نے اگلے پانچ سالوں میں پاکستان کو مختلف ترقیاتی منصوبوں بالخصوص شہری خدمات کے شعبوں، آفات کے خطرے میں کمی اور پالیسی پر مبنی پروگراموں کے لیے تقریباً 10 بلین ڈالر کی تازہ امداد فراہم کرنے کا منصوبہ بنایا ہے۔

انہوں نے یہ بھی بتایا کہ پاکستان کو (اے پی وی اے ایکس)کے تحت کورونا وائرس ویکسینز کی خریداری کے لیے فی الحال 700 ملین ڈالر کی اضافی فنانسنگ دستیاب ہے۔

وزیر نے اس بات پر روشنی ڈالی کہ تیزی سے شہری کاری اور آبادی میں اضافے کے پیش نظر شہری خدمات کا شعبہ موجودہ حکومت کی اولین ترجیح ہے۔

انہوں نے مزید کہا کہ "حکومت شہری بنیادی ڈھانچے اور خدمات کو بہتر بنانے کے لیے پرعزم ہے جس میں پانی اور صفائی کی خدمات، پبلک ٹرانسپورٹ، شہری سیلاب اور آفات سے نمٹنے اور صحت کی سہولیات شامل ہیں۔"

اس وقت ADB توانائی، سڑک اور ٹرانسپورٹ، زراعت اور آبپاشی، شہری خدمات، تعلیم، صحت اور سماجی تحفظ کے شعبوں میں 6.4 بلین ڈالر کے 32 ترقیاتی منصوبوں کی مالی معاونت کر رہا ہے۔
