Balakot hydropower project to add 300MW to national grid

The Balakot hydropower project would add 300 megawatts to the national grid besides generating about Rs1.3 billion revenue per annum and providing ample employment opportunities.

Malik Luqman, Senior Planning Officer, KP Energy Department told this news agency that the project will comprise the construction of a 300 MW run-of-river hydropower plant located in Mansehra district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, adding on its completion, people of the area would have affordable and smooth power supply.

He said it would boost the provincial economy and promote revenue-generating investments in the hydro abundant KP. Luqman said a survey for land acquisition was carried out and physical demarcation on dam reservoirs, colony, access road, and surge area almost completed.

He said the project would be completed with the assistance of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) besides generating jobs for thousands of youth and the technical workforce.

“Work on 496MW Lower Spat Gah HHP has been launched under Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with the assistance of Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Company (KHNP),” he said, adding International Finance Corporation (IFC), a sister organization of World Bank Group, had been engaged for transaction advisory services to help assist Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organization (PEDO) for arranging necessary financing for the development of HPPs.

Two HPPs i.e. 88MW Gabral Kalam and 157 MW Madyn in Swat are being executed with the assistance of World Bank costing Rs142 billion, he said adding World Bank would provide the US $ 450 million while KP Govt would contribute $151 million and $185 million would be arranged through commercial financing by World Bank.

کے پی انرجی ڈیپارٹمنٹ کے سینئر پلاننگ آفیسر ملک لقمان نے اس نیوز ایجنسی کو بتایا کہ یہ منصوبہ خیبر پختونخوا کے ضلع مانسہرہ میں واقع 300 میگاواٹ کا رن آف ریور ہائیڈرو پاور پلانٹ کی تعمیر پر مشتمل ہوگا ، اس کی تکمیل کے بعد علاقے کے لوگوں کو سستی اور ہموار بجلی فراہمی کی جائے گی-

انہوں نے کہا کہ اس سے صوبائی معیشت کو فروغ ملے گا اور ہائیڈرو پرچر کے پی میں آمدنی پیدا کرنے والی سرمایہ کاری کو فروغ ملے گا۔ لقمان نے کہا کہ زمین کے حصول کے لیے ایک سروے کیا گیا اور ڈیم کے آبی ذخائر ، کالونی ، رسائی سڑک اور سرج ایریا پر جسمانی حد بندی تقریبا مکمل ہو چکی ہے۔

انہوں نے کہا کہ یہ منصوبہ ایشیائی ترقیاتی بینک (اے ڈی بی) کے تعاون سے مکمل کیا جائے گا اور ہزاروں نوجوانوں کے لیے روزگار کے مواقع پیدا کیے جائیں گے۔

انہوں نے کہا کہ 496 میگاواٹ لوئر سپاٹ گہ ایچ ایچ پی پر کام پبلک پرائیویٹ پارٹنرشپ (پی پی پی) کے تحت کوریا ہائیڈرو اور نیوکلیئر پاور کمپنی (کے ایچ این پی) کے تعاون سے شروع کیا گیا ہے۔ ، HPPs کی ترقی کے لیے ضروری فنانسنگ کے انتظام کے لیے پختونخوا انرجی ڈویلپمنٹ آرگنائزیشن (PEDO) کی مدد کے لیے لین دین کی مشاورتی خدمات کے لیے مصروف تھا۔

دو HPPs یعنی 88MW گبرال کلام اور 157 میگاواٹ مدین سوات میں 142 ارب روپے کی لاگت سے چلائے جا رہے ہیں ، انہوں نے کہا کہ ورلڈ بینک 450 ملین امریکی ڈالر فراہم کرے گا جبکہ کے پی حکومت 151 ملین ڈالر اور 185 ملین ڈالر کا تعاون کرے گی۔
